Step 2 USMLE Books – A Look at the New Step 2 CK “Must-Have” Book

The common misconception about the USMLE Step 2 CK exam is that it is much easier than the Step 1 exam, and for the most part this is probably true. But, and this is a big but, if you don’t take the USMLE CK exam seriously, you may only get an average score and destroy all of the hard work you put in to score well on the Step 1 exam. Most people believe that the only thing the residency programs are looking at is the Step 1 score, but this is only partially true. The Step 1 is what gets your foot in the door, but if you don’t excel on the CK exam, this gives the impression that you worked hard on Step 1 but not on Step 2, which may be the case. If you perform “average” on the CK exam after doing well on Step 1, the residency programs may think you are inconsistent or worse yet, lazy. Now they don’t all think this way, but I’ve seen a good number of students who scored better on Step 1 than they did on Step 2, and since the Step 2 CK exam is thought to be easier, this just simply looks bad on us as students trying to land a great residency spot. As a rule, you should do the same or better on Step 2 than you did on Step 1. This will probably be easier said than done, because the Step 2 CK does contain a lot of information. One of the reasons that people often do better on Step 1 is because there is that fantastic study guide you all know as “First Aid For the Step 1″, which is simply the Bible for the Step 1 exam. There isn’t a single medical student out there who does not own or has not at least looked through the First Aid book when preparing for the Step 1 exam. The struggle for the Step 2 exam comes when you realize there really isn’t any great “GO TO” sources for studying for the Step 2 CK exam. There is not that one book that you “must have” when it comes for studying for the USMLE CK, which leaves many students scrambling through two, three, or more sources trying to cover all of the relevant information. There are many sources available, but none of them seem to cover everything you need all in one book, similar to that feature that we all came to love from the Step 1 version of the First Aid. This lack of high-quality Step 2 USMLE books has sparked the interest of a newly graduated medical doctor who told me that he’s in the midst of putting together a brand new USMLE CK preparation guide that is the combination of up to seven of the commonly used Step 2 preparation books used today. Apparently this new book is going to “Do for the Step 2 CK exam what the First Aid did for the Step 1 exam”, he said. The book “The USMLE Step 2 CK Bible” is apparently being released on June 25th 2010, and promises to be an “All-you-need” source for Step 2 CK material. Some of the features that the Step 2 Ck Bible will contain are: 1 – In-depth theory covering every aspect of the CK exam (not only the high-yield stuff, but also the medium-yield information – which is supposed to help you get those extra points that many of the popular CK study guides seem to overlook). 2 – A section containing the top 1000 high-yield nuggets, which he says will cover almost every possible high-yield question asked on the CK exam, 3 – A tell-all source dedicated to interviews done on past test-takers as they spill everything they can possibly remember (integrated throughout the book, showing you where past students have had questions and what kind of questions they have had) I know there’s been a few copies released, all gaining great reviews so far. We’ll see what happens with the USMLE Step 2 CK Bible, but this guy is a great educator from what I’ve seen and heard, and I know he is dedicated to making this new USMLE CK study guide the best of the best. The nicest thing is that this CK study guide will be priced lower than all the other books out there, which is great for medical students. I will update when I get my copy and read it, for now you can take a look at what the “USMLE Step 2 CK BIBLE” has to offer.
