(I’ll be covering what to do for oral and
practical exams in the next exam success tip)

WRITTEN EXAM EXCELLENCE
————————————————–
The first four Success Tips have shown you
how to excellently prepare yourself for your
exams.
Now it’s time to make your preparation and
revision really count – and really be at your
best on the day of your exam.
So access your personal state of calm, confident
curiosity – and activate your imagination.
————————————————–
EXAM PREPARATION
————————————————–
You can prepare yourself for your exam by:
- Doing your revision well, practice doing
really good answers, knowing exactly what you
need to do to get good results and be
ready to show the best of what you know.
- Gathering everything you need for your exam
the day before:
Pens, spare pens, pencils, rulers, erasers,
calculators, watches/stopwatches, bottles of
water and everything you are allowed to have
in the exam that will help you give the best
answers.
In the 24 hours before the exam, make sure you
treat yourself really well:
- Get enough sleep
- Eat healthy foods
- Do some exercise
Plan to have everything ready the day before so
you can completely focus on giving awesome answers
in your exam.
It’s smart to know exactly *when* your exam is and
*where* it is on and double check the details.
By preparing well, you are preparing yourself
for more success.
————————————————–
JUST BEFORE THE EXAM
————————————————–
On the day of the exam, wake up, eat a light
breakfast and review your notes.
Aim to get to your exam a little early, with
everything you need.
Once you are there, re-access your state of calm,
confident curiosity and remind yourself of times
in your life when you did things really well.
Many people find it useful to really focus at
this point, and enter their personal zone or
flow state in which they perform at their best.
So really *concentrate* your mind.
It’s often helpful *not* to talk to other people
doing the exam just before. At the very least,
avoid people who are anxious and stressed, and
only talk to the people around you who help
reinforce your confidence.
It’s useful at this point to remind yourself
not to take exams too seriously, and while they
are important, in the grander scheme of things
they are a relatively small part of life.
By adopting this state of mind, and becoming
calmly focused and free of worry, you’ll be able
to give better answers.

WRITTEN EXAMS – IN THE EXAM
————————————————–
As you walk into the exam, walk confidently.
Start by sitting comfortably and organise your
stationary. Take as much time as you need.
It’s time for you to demonstrate your knowledge
and skill.
When you sit down, feel your growing inner
confidence. Think thoughts to yourself like
“It’s time to show off my knowledge”.

EXAM SUCCESS TECHNIQUE
————————————————–
Here is an excellent technique you can use
at the beginning of your exam, just after
you’ve sat down:
1) Begin by squeezing your thumb and finger
together to powerfully re-access your calm,
confident curiosity.
(You’ll notice how, as you practice this
more, you get better)
2) Start by reading through all the exam questions
and as you read through each question, squeeze
your thumb and finger together, triggering your
state of calm confidence and connecting this with
the way you think about answering your questions.
3) Once you’ve read through the whole exam paper,
and made yourself aware of the questions, close
your eyes for a few moments and breathe calmly
and deeply.
Tell yourself in your mind that as you count from
5 down to 1, your unconscious is going to prepare
you to answer the questions excellently using the
best of everything you know.
Then count from 5 down to 1, really believing
this is going to work, breathing calmly and
slowly as you do.
When you reach 1, open your eyes and feel
the confidence.
You might even begin to notice really good
ideas on how to answer questions popping
into your mind.
4) Next (before you start writing) glance
through the paper once more and briefly think
through how to answer the different questions
in your mind, without writing them down.
(By approaching your exam this way, your
mind can prepare you to answer the question
excellently, so by the time you actually write
the answer down, your mind will have already
thought about how to do it well)
5) Notice how many marks each question is
worth and plan to answer every question
you are supposed to, spending more time
on the questions that are worth the most.
Use your clock or stopwatch to help you
with this. Make sure it’s right.
5) Then, work through your questions, answering
each question really well. As you read
through each question, ask yourself:
“How can I give a really excellent
answer to this question?”
“What do I have to do to get top marks in
this question?”
6) Aim to complete the entire exam with
some time left over – so you can review your
answers and make them even better.

br />WRITTEN EXAM ESSENTIALS
————————————————–
There are some simple things that will help
you get good marks:
- Understand *how* to present your answers
and follow the guidelines provided.
(for example, in some exams, students are asked
to put answers for different questions on
separate pages / in separate answer booklets)
- Write clearly and neatly, so your writing
is easy to read.
- Use a clock or stopwatch and use your time
intelligently – spend more time on questions
that are worth more and make sure you don’t
spend too much time on any one question.
- If you need to go to the bathroom during
the exam, go when you need to – so your mind
is free to focus on helping you answer the
questions as much of the time as possible
- Draw attention to the most important parts of
answers using colour, bullet points and titles.
————————————————–
SMART ANSWERS
————————————————–
In an exam, you usually have a limited amount
of time to answer a lot of questions.
It’s *smart* to answer all your questions in
a way that gets you the most marks, quickly.
Think about different ways you can efficiently use
use your time and demonstrate your knowledge
and skills.
Here are some suggestions:
- Using bullet points to give answers in point
form where appropriate.
- Use simple diagrams that you can draw
quickly, when they are the best way you can
explain you know and understand something.
Label them correctly and refer to them in your
answer.
- Write down only what you need – for example
some people waste time copying the entire
question down, when they only need to write
down the answer.
- Base the way you answer your questions on
examples of the best answers you’ve seen.
- Leave space after each answer, so you can
add extra parts if you think of them
afterwards.
- Plan longer answers. Make sure they are
well structured – and divide up long areas of
text into neat paragraphs that convey what you
know (and your ability to express it) clearly.
- If you need to remember something, think about
how you made it memorable for yourself and
what it’s connected to. It’s often useful
to remember where you were when you learned it,
or any thoughts connected with it. This will
help you re-access what you know.
- Divide your time between different questions,
spending more time on the questions worth the
most.
- Unless your exam has negative marking,
(where a wrong answer leads to marks being
deducted) it’s a good idea to write down
some kind of answer for every question, even
if you’re not sure of the right answer.
So if you don’t know the right answer,
leave some space, write down a brief
answer, and plan to return to it afterwards
when you’ve answered the other questions well.
