B1/B2 visa Interview- Tips & FAQs
- You must provide specific contact and address information both in India and the United States. Applications with responses such as “any hotel” as the address in the U.S. will be rejected for additional information.
- Letters of Recommendations have minimal or no value during the visa interview.
- The visa officer has the right to grant/ reject visa without looking at any of your documents.
- The visa officer might record in your file whatever you say during the interview. So you are expected not to give conflicting answers each time you go for a visa interview.
- Take a copy of your application form before you submit one. It will be useful for your reference later.
- If you have any injuries in your index finger (used for fingerprinting), you might be asked to come back after it heals.
Frequently asked questions:
How early can one reapply, if the visa is rejected?
You can reapply even the next day! But the visa officer might look for a significant change in your application before he grants you a visa. Again, there are no hard and fast rules. One of my friends got the visa when he reapplied in a couple of week’s time. But my visa was rejected when I reapplied in the same duration. The visa officer told me that he cant see any changes in my application.
Do multiple rejections for B1/B2 visa affect our chances to get H1b/ J1/ Greencard??
I have 5 attempts for B1/B2 visa and I will be applying for H1 b visa soon. Will let you guys know what happens. One of my seniors who had 7 attempts for B1/B2 visa did not have any problems in getting h1b visa.
What is the validity period?
The B1/B2 visa validity period mentioned in your passport is just the date before which you are supposed to enter the US. The duration of your stay in the US will be decided at the port of entry and not during the visa interview in the consulate. There are people who got only 1 month validity period mentioned in the visa and got 6 months at the port of entry.
How early should I reach the consulate for the interview?
Usually in India, the US consulates are crowded and it is better to reach the place well ahead of your appointment time. I have no idea about the consulates in other countries. Readers are welcome to comment about the consulates in their home countries.
