B1/B2 visa Interview- Documents to carry

US is always unique to each person. Each candidate has a different and would have a new story to tell you about what happened inside the consulate.
Also procedures vary from consulate to consulate. Find your nearest US embassy here

Here is a rough list of documents which one is expected to carry for the US .

  • Forms DS 156 & 157. I have attached these forms here. Just have a look at the kind of asked. Click here for DS 156
  • A valid passport with a validity date at least 6 months beyond your intended stay.
  • Passport photos.
  • HDFC Bank Fee Receipt with two bar code stickers (for Indians).
  • An invitation letter from your relative in the U.S. to demonstrate the purpose of your trip.
  • CS request letter/ CS date permit/ Interview invitation emails/ Step 3 confirmation page
  • USMLE Scores. I have known some guys getting even before taking STEP 1 and/or STEP 2CK. But there are occasions when the officer had asked candidates to come back after getting USMLE Step 1 and STEP 2ck scores.
  • Undergraduation(Eg. MBBS) mark sheets. (They might look for any failures in your marksheets). You can also take other certificates demonstrating your proficiency.
  • Diploma/ Degree Certificates
  • Evidence of sufficient funds to cover the trip and living expenses in the U.S. (For eg. bank statement). I went to the Consulate 5 times for B1/B2 . But they never asked me for these even once. But they rejected one of my friends application once for financial reasons. Recent huge deposits in your bank statement might raise a query. If your parent is sponsoring you, you can take his/her bank statement.
  • If somebody is sponsoring your trip, take his/her bank statements, sponsor letter, salary proof etc
  • Proof of your job. (Eg. Identity card, Letter from your employer). Please note that one of the frequently asked are related to your employment or status.
  • Form I-134 (Optional)
  • Air Tickets are not necessary. But if you are planning to take one, round-trip and not one-way. A one-way ticket holder might be assumed to be a potential immigrant!
  • Ties in home country: Your family’s property documents, Bank statements, etc. During the , you might be asked : “How can we believe that you will come back (after your CS /interviews/ or even ?” Be ready with your answer. Updated jan 6, 2008: You are the best person to answer this . Because each individual will have some unique reason to say. Other general reasons are family ties, job in home country etc. If you are a you can say that you have a course to complete. You can also mention any financial ties like properties you (or your family) own in your home country. If you have any different to be tried, please leave a comment below.
  • Trip itenarary
  • Affidavits??? (I dont think they are interested in all these) Dont show affidavits unless asked for. Some guys prepare affidavits that they will definitely return to India.
